Description

Adult/Teen Beginning Sewing Classes at Sewing and Fitting Mentor

Level: Beginner Sewists    Duration: 5 Weeks    Session Length: 2-hour, Self-Paced Weekly Session

Our Adult/Teen Beginning Sewing Classes are designed for beginner sewists. These 2-hour, self-paced (meaning student works on their own project, and speed according to skill level) classes run weekly for 4 weeks, creating an environment of creativity, knowledge, and enthusiasm for sewing. Students of various skill levels and ages share the classroom, learning together and from each other.

Initial Class: We kick off reviewing the basics from the Intro to the Sewing Machine class that is a prerequisite for:

-Intro to Garment Sewing using Palmer & Pletsch Learn to Sew series. Four levels are geared toward the beginner, covering all the basics to help people start sewing on their own. Step-by-step pattern instructions go through the construction of:

  • an apron Level 1

  • a kimono-style robe Level 2

  •  two-piece pajamas Levels 3

  • Level 4 teaches how to sew zippers, elastic, buttonholes, and much more

Length of each level is approximately 12 hours, including instruction, sample making for the notebook, and sewing the project. The complete four-level course can be completed in approximately 48 hours. This means each level will take approximately one 6-week class session to complete.

(This can vary depending on your skill and any work completed at home.)

Completion of this class prepares you for making garments on your own or for Sewing with Mentoring or Pattern Fitting classes: Pants Fitting, and the Sloper class

-Non-Garment Beginner sewing using the book School of Sewing as the curriculum, which provides an engaging and detailed lesson plan to guide you along your sewing journey.
With a strong focus on hands-on learning, you will progressively tackle more complex tasks, including:

  • Learning to read and understand sewing instructions.

  • Gaining insights into the tools and accessories that make sewing more efficient and enjoyable.

  • Mastering essential sewing techniques such as seams, sewing curves, and using different presser feet during construction. Exploring different types of fabrics and their best use in different sewing projects.

Undertaking beginner-friendly projects, like crafting a simple tote bag or pillow, to apply your newfound skills in a practical setting.

School of Sewing features 12 beginner projects with step-by-step photos. Skills and techniques include fabric selection, color theory, navigating the fabric store (including interfacing, notions, and fabric types), and numerous sewing skills such as zippers, ruffles, buttonholes, pleats, binding, sewing curves, and machine quilting, among others!

Completion of class will prepare you for our Quilting and Bag Making classes.
