Prerequisite: Beginner Quiltmaking or equivalent skills (machine operation, basic terminology, pattern reading, rotary cutting, consistent seam allowances, and basic piecing).

Supplies:

  • One charm pack (40–42 precut 5" squares) or 40 precisely cut 5" squares
  • 1 yard high‑contrast background fabric (bring uncut)
  • Binding, backing, and batting determined after project selection
  • Basic quilting tools (studio cutters, rulers, and mats available)

Optional Reference Books (available in studio):
School of Sewing — Shea Henderson
First-Time Quiltmaking (2nd ed.) — Landauer Publishing

Description

Advanced Beginner Quiltmaking lead by Joy Carlson

Adults and Teens age 16+

Five sessions – 9:30 AM to Noon – Thursdays – January 8, 15, 22 & 29

Take your beginner quiltmaking skills to the next level with triangles in a fun project of your own design!

Prerequisites: Beginner Quiltmaking class or proven quilting essentials and sewing skills, including proper use of the sewing machine, basic sewing terminology, pattern reading and quilting terminology, rotary cutting, stitching with consistent seam allowances, and a foundational understanding of how to piece and assemble a quilt.

Advanced Beginner Quiltmaking will move beginners from piecing with only squares and rectangles to incorporating triangles into their designs. We will explore the fundamentals of working with triangles. You will create your own project using half-square triangle blocks. We will “play” with half square triangles and you will create your own project (table or bed runner, pillow cover, placemats, doll quilt, or baby quilt or throw*).

Cost: $99

Supplies needed:

  • 1 charm pack (i.e., 40-42 precut, coordinating five-inch squares) or a variety of coordinating fabrics precisely cut into 40 five-inch squares prior to the first class.

  • 1 yd. background fabric with high contrast (solid, tone-on-tone, or microprint) to the fabrics in the charm pack or your own selections. Bring to class uncut.

  • Binding, backing, and batting yardages to be determined based on the project you choose in the first class.

  • Basic quilting tools.**

Reference books (available for in-studio use or purchase):

  • School of Sewing: Learn It, Teach It, Sew Together. Shea Henderson, Lucky Spool Media, LLC.

  • First-Time Quiltmaking: Learning to Quilt in Six Easy Lessons (2nd edition). Landauer Publishing.

*Two charm packs and two yards of contrasting background fabric will be sufficient for making the top of a baby quilt or small throw with half-square triangles. To complete a quilt of this size will require work outside of classes.

**Rotary cutters, rulers, and mats are available for use (or purchase) in studio.
